Network Documentation

What to record so troubleshooting and change work depend less on memory.

Purpose: This is general operational guidance. Your environment, contracts, regulatory obligations and platform capabilities can change the right answer.

Addressing and services

Record subnets, gateways, DHCP scopes, reservations, DNS servers and important static addresses.

Segmentation

Document VLAN IDs, purpose, tagging expectations, SSIDs and the intended policy between network segments.

Physical and logical topology

Record switches, firewalls, access points, uplinks, WAN circuits, critical ports and how sites connect.

Management and monitoring

Record management addresses, controller platforms, logging destinations and monitoring ownership.

Vendor and circuit information

Keep ISP, circuit, account and escalation information where authorized staff can find it quickly.

Handle credentials securely

Document how access is obtained, not privileged passwords in an ordinary spreadsheet or public diagram. Use an approved credential-management process.

Use the guide as a conversation starter

The goal is not to make every reader a specialist. It is to make the next technical conversation more informed.
