Incident Response Readiness

Prepare the decisions that become difficult when an account compromise, ransomware event or major security incident is already underway.

Purpose: This is general operational guidance. Your environment, contracts, regulatory obligations and platform capabilities can change the right answer.

Know who leads

Define the technical lead, executive decision maker, insurer/counsel contacts and external specialists before an incident.

Protect emergency access

Maintain secured break-glass accounts and know how to regain access if normal identity systems are affected.

Define containment authority

Document which actions the IT or security team may take immediately, such as disabling accounts or isolating endpoints.

Know the evidence sources

Identify EDR, email, firewall, identity and SIEM logs that may be needed to understand the event.

Connect recovery to response

Do not restore systems until containment and recovery priorities are understood. Recovery can otherwise reintroduce the problem.

Practice the process

A short tabletop exercise can reveal missing phone numbers, unclear authority and unrealistic assumptions before a real incident.

Use the guide as a conversation starter

The goal is not to make every reader a specialist. It is to make the next technical conversation more informed.
